I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to exhibit my graduate collection, ‘Peonies, Lilies and Other Pretties…’ at this year’s New Designers exhibition, at the Business Design Centre in London.

Part 1 – 3-6 July: Contemporary Applied Arts, Ceramics & Glass, Textiles, Fashion & Accessories, Jewellery & Precious Metalwork.

“New Designers is the foremost event in graduate design and, fulfilling its annual promise, New Designers 2008 marks the emergence of the year’s brightest talents presenting their unique and fascinating degree work. The show is exciting, surprising, and vibrant – a hotbed of smart thinking and original ideas brought together in the dynamic environment of the Business Design Centre”.

After a lot of tears of joy and achey cheeks from all the smiling, it finally hit me that I had been announced as the winner of the ‘New Designer of the Year 2008′ award, which was presented by one of my favourite designers, Cath Kidston.

PART 1 – BDC NEW DESIGNER OF THE YEAR

The Business Design Centre hosts the New Designers exhibition and contributes the crowning award in the form of The BDC New Designer of the Year. The substantial prize for which every design discipline is considered, is judged by an independent panel of leading industry experts.

Winner : Abigail Borg, Leeds College of Art & Design, BA Hons Textiles & Surface Pattern Design.

Judges citation : ‘Abigail has exquisite drawing skills and sensitivity to colour. An accomplished and consistent body of work which is both professional and has strong commercial potential.’

Winner’s remarks : ‘I am honoured to have won the BDC New Designer of the Year Award. This is a fantastic prize and an opportunity to launch my designs commercially. The prize will equip me with both financial and business advice which is so crucial at the start of my career.’
